The passing of two great Marist men

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of two St John's Old Boys and great men, John Vaemolo (class of 1980) and Paul Schollum (class of 1970).

Paul passed away peacefully at Totara Hospice on 22nd January 2024, aged 72, surrounded by his loving family. At St John's he was Head Boy in 1970 and was a wicket-keeper in the 1st XI cricket team.

John was John was arguably St John’s top athlete. He played in the SJC 1st XV rugby team in 1979 and 1980, was selected for the NZ SS Rugby team vs Australia in 1980 and was also an outstanding track runner:
  • Waikato SS Track champion for 100m, 110m hurdles, 200m 1979/80
  • NZ SS Track champion 100m, 110m hurdles 1979
  • NZ SS Track Champion 110m hurdles, 2nd 100m (10.3) 1980
  • North Island SS 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles and member of Waikato 4x 100m Relay team, all won in record time 1980
  • In November 1980, John ran a world record time of 6.4 for 60m at the Hamilton Athletic Club Champs-no wind was recorded so the record was not ratified.
Leaving school, John joined the army, progressing to the SAS and reached the highest rank possible for a non commissioned officer.
